Ever since its foundation in 1519, Havana has played a pivotal role in Cuba’s history, art and culture, and the city retains a mythic aura that seduces visitors and natives alike. In this special collection, we explore what different representations of Havana may tell us about Cuba today, while also reassessing critically the artistic, literary, and cultural representations of Cuba’s past. By analysing literary and cultural expressions from the 19th to the 21st centuries, the collection draws attention to the relation between aesthetics, politics, and national identity in modern Cuba.
